How to Take Great Pictures (Part 1)

Of course the most asked question is always "how can I take pictures like that?".

Well the answer is both easy and hard (how's that for equivocation?).

The first thing you need to remember is that you don't need an expensive camera to get great photos. Likewise, formal training is helpful, but not a necessity by any stretch of the imagination.
The most important thing is to take a lot of pictures. That is the foundation of the digital revolution.

Have you ever seen shows about models or photographers at shoots? The thing that you should notice first is the sheer number of pictures that are being taken. The more shots, the better chance of getting a "keeper". Now obviously if you are shooting a landscape, you aren't going to stand there shouting "beautiful baby! give me all you got!". It isn't necessary, because landscapes rarely listen to directions, and it will make you look like a raving lunatic.

But don't be afraid to take a couple of shots, changing the framing and camera settings if possible (a subject for a later post). Then move along to a different perspective and take some more.

IMPORTANT POINT: Do not ever delete pictures from the camera while you are in the field. I've had shots that I thought were totally worthless only to see them become a keeper once I saw them on a computer screen. Invest in another memory card and keep it with you. I can come in handy.

Next post topic: Uh, I really haven't decided yet. But stick with it, it'll be worth it

Questions, questions, questions…

I’ve received many questions about my photography, and I figured the best way to answer them is with a blog. As I get time I’ll post answers to some of the things I’ve been asked. And maybe we can get somewere.I’ve received many questions about my photography, and I figured the best way to answer them is with a blog.
